I love these cards. Deserves all the great reviews. However, the new edition is basically the same as the last edition as far as content goes. I think there are 2 extra cards. They are worth every penny, but if you're a student, might want to save some money and keep the 3rd edition. I have only gone through about 1/2 of the cards, so my review is based on that. If I find any other new info, I will update. The cards are now thicker, and have a glossy coating. This is good since they're more sturdy and resistant to stains. But it can make it hard if you like to write on them or highlight things you keep forgetting. Also, makes them seem more daunting since the set itself is about 1/3 thicker than the last edition, even though it has the same number of cards. Another nice addition is that it comes with a big ring and the cards are punched, so you can keep the cards together easier. The colors are also a bit different and Pathogenesis icons are now black and white ( I preferred the color icons).Overall, these are great cards for Step or course review. Depends on your learning style. I usually switch between FA and sketchy and use these when I want to change it up or do 10/day so I won't forget things when I'm studying other subjects. I was hoping the new edition would have updated content as far as treatment, or addition of more tips. I guess changing the paper and adding a glossy finish categorizes them as "new edition". This is a great resource and I appreciate the author and publisher for this, but at the same time, I don't like when they change the cover or minor words and call it a new edition... But I understand it's business :)
These cards are packed with information and were a big help through my courses, but there are three big flaws:1. The cards are super glossy which makes annotating them impossible because everything smudges right off.2. The text is absolutely tiny, which if you're someone like me who likes to have a few of these out at a time, can be very annoying.3. I am not sure why they did this, but the pictures of bacteria are cartoonish drawings instead of photos. While this makes it very clear what, for instance, a gram-positive diplococcus would look like, I think it would have been a lot more helpful to have actual photos since that is what most exams out there would show you.Perhaps the best thing about this deck are the classification cards and route-of-infection cards. Very informative and makes it easy to synthesize the information.
Right now I'm just pulling out the relevant cards from the stack to review for each exam, and it's much faster/better/easier than making my own cards. I plan on using them for Step 1 review also. I feel like they strike a good balance in terms of the level of detail for each organism - there's not nearly as much detail as there is in the book, but so far it's everything I need to know for my exams.
I love these cards. Each card is filled with descriptive pictures, colors, clinical vignettes, mechanism of action, treatments, and more. They summarize everything you need to know for micro on the COMLEX and USMLE. There really isn't a downfall to these cards. Not that it matters too much, but the cards are very smooth and easier to handle. Each one is relatively wide however. But the cards serve their purpose and helps CONSOLIDATE everything you need to know about every microbe for the boards.
Let me start by saying these cards are very well organized and information dense. Completely wrong for the class I bought them for (microbiology 260). There are useful bits of information on these for my purpose, but I can't really study and hammer through the flashcards, it's more clinical, case study, etc. I need more bacteria and virus physiology. I will use these in a few years.
Every Micro student should have one !! $35 is cheap for the ease and handiness of these reference cards. Color coded. On a handy ring... lab coat pocket size. Bacteria, viruses, normal flora of body systems... very complete !
everybody at my school (and probably yours too) LOVES sketchymicro. It didn't work for my learning style- too impatient, too passive a mode of learning to keep me focused. These cards are the single resource from which I've learned the most micro.
